Ying Zheng was the first Emperor of China, who assumed the title of Qin Shi Huang. In A Step into the Past broadcast on TVB in 2001, Ying Zheng, played by Raymond Lam Fung, was the subordinate male protagonist, second only to Xiang Shaolong.
Ying Zheng in A Step into the Past was originally named Zhao Pan, who was a frivolous playboy. After Zhao Pan met Xiang Shaolong, he was impressed by Xiang Shaolong’s martial arts skills and became his apprentice. After training, Zhao Pan became well-behaved and sensible. Later, Xiang Shaolong learned that the “hostage son” Ying Zheng, who was detained in Zhao, had died. In order to make it right with history, he thought of a trick to replace the deceased Ying Zheng with his apprentice Zhao Pan. Later, with the help of Xiang Shaolong, Ying Zheng conquered the six states and unified China. After ascending the throne as Qin Shi Huang, he became arrogant, brutal and merciless. To keep his identity a secret, he ordered to hunt down and kill Xiang Shaolong. In the end, Ying Zheng decided to burn books and bury Confucian scholars alive, so as to eliminate any record about Xiang Shaolong in history (According to authentic historical records, Qin Shi Huang burned books and buried Confucian scholars alive to consolidate his political power).
This exhibit is the robe worn by Ying Zheng after his accession to the throne. With this robe on, Raymond Lam Fung, who is 1.8 metres tall, looked magnificent and elegant, showcasing the dominance of an emperor.
Bonus: In ancient times, emperors’ “imperial robes” were often made with yellow fabrics to show their nobility. However, Qin Shi Huang’s “imperial robe” was black. Historians analysed that the reason could be that Qin Shi Huang firmly believed in the theory of yin-yang and five elements. Since Qin had the attribute of the element “water”, he thus favoured black. Therefore, the clothes, banners and flags of the Qin dynasty were mainly black in colour. The outfit of Qin Shi Huang, who was played by Raymond Lam Fung, shows his gigantic stature and charisma.
